One year on. My top blogs. My top products. And a thank you present

7 Sep

It was a year ago today – on the 7th September 2011 that I started blusherandblogging.com.

My sister helped me with everything – I would never have managed to set it up without help from her.

I was leaving for what became one of the best trips of my life on the following day. And I wanted to write while I was gone. I was lucky enough to go to Thailand, to Australia, to New Zealand to the rugby world cup, and to America, before coming home again.

The blog grew and grew with every day that passed, and I can hardly express my gratitude to everyone who reads it, and everyone who supports me and gives me such wonderful feedback – people I know, people I don’t know, and people that I feel I know. 130 blogs this year, and over 200,000 hits in the first year – I really did start it as a hobby.

Here are the most popular blogs from the year – a couple wouldn’t be the ones that I would pick as my personal favourites – the Veet one for example. A wonderful product but more mainstream than a discovery – I guess people just wanted to see if there was a quick and easy hair removal system  - for the summer that never really came – for us in the UK anyway.

The Top Blogs

1) Sweet Lemongrass Massage – Phuket

2) Veet EasyWax (unthinkably easy) Good weather = Bare skin

3) Fake Tans – The good, the bad, and the scary

4) Clarisonic Mia vs Rio Sonicleanse

5) Actress Amy Huberman Top 5 Beauty Products (the most hits that I had on a blog in one day)

6) Sleep and Stress – Tips, products, and pressure points (my personal favourite blog)

7) 100% Pure Argan Oil – 10% off

8) St Tropez Skin Illuminators Violet/Rose/Gold

9) Better Hair – Big Hair, Curl, Tong, Volumise, Blow

10) Silkskin 100% Natural Silk Pillowcase – Anti Ageing

My top products

These are some of my favourite things that I have discovered this year – so none of my old favourites like my beloved Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel (that I find myself mentioning anyway!)

1) Clarisonic Mia £95.00

Usually £120.00 but currently a special offer price.

2) Eve Taylor Massage Candle £12.59

Use the code ‘blusher‘ at checkout for a 10% discount.

Click here for my blog on these amazing candles that moisturise and relax.

3) Palmers Cocoa Butter Natural Bronze £5.09

Free worldwide delivery. Click here for my blog on this. This has easily become my favourite daily tanner.

4) Urban Decay Naked Palette £36.00

Free worldwide delivery – all the eyeshadows one could ever need! Click here for my blog on this

5) Artdeco – Dita Von Teese Gel Eyeliner £19.50

Use the code ‘blusher‘ at checkout for a 10% discount. I have fallen deeply in love with this eyeliner – and its brush – which is £9.50. The discount code is applicable to both.

6) 100% Pure Argan Oil £19.95

10% reduction when you follow the link above – the product becomes £17.95. So many products have Argan Oil in them, but to use it in it’s 100% undiluted form is where real benefits are seen from it. Click here for my Argan blog.

7) Elemis – Quiet Mind Temple Balm £14.00 (but currently £11.20)

Free worldwide delivery. This little bottle travels everywhere with me – everywhere that I will need to sleep anyway!

8) Terre d’Oc  - Milky Make Up Remover Oil £19.50

For 10% discount enter the code ‘blusher’ at checkout. For my blog on this cleanser – and in-fact their anti-pollution foundation -click here

9) MAC ‘Morange’ Lipstick £13.50

I think it would have been impossible for me to rave about this lipstick any more than I have. It’s a glorious outrageous orange.  Click here for my Morange blog.

10) Daniel Sandler Invisible Radiance Foundation £28.00

The most incredible concealer comes in the lid, so it is very much an all over skin wonder product. For my blog on it and all of the available shades click here

Thank you

I bought, along with one for myself this week, a Lush Massage Bar to send to someone.

Please leave a comment below if you would like to try one – and I will send it to someone.

As I always want to send to everyone and can’t possibly chose, I will ask my sister to help me, or I will do it randomly.

I bought their ‘Hottie’ bar to send, and for myself too. My ‘Therapy’ bar from Lush – that I rub into my hands and feet, arms and legs every night, has run out. I hope I like their ‘Hottie’ version as much. To read about it www.lush.co.uk/massagehottie

Reduced £95 Clarisonic Mia

17 Aug

20120817-173644.jpg

The Clarisonic Mia has been reduced from it’s usual £120.00 to £95.00 at Escentual.com after a Facebook ‘hit the like button’ promotion.

This is the cheapest price that it is possible to buy this amazing cleansing brush in the UK. I have never actually seen it cheaper.

They only have 1000 of them available and when they are sold out, the offer is no longer available.

The Clarisonic Mia gives skin a 6 times better cleanse than hands do alone. Dry patches clear up, oiliness is reduced,
pores are refined, fine lines are reduced, and truly cleansed skin means that products that are applied afterwards such as serums, moisturisers, and face oils actually have a chance of doing their job, as opposed to sitting on top of a layer of grime and dead skin cells.

I am forever asking people in the skincare business their top tip for fantastic skin, and the most popular answer is cleansing properly.

If you have been considering buying a Clarisonic – this is the cheapest price that it is going to be.

Suitable for every age and every skin type- even sensitive.

Seven colours are available:- White, Poppy, Lavender, Yellow, Green, Blue, Pink

Free UK Delivery first class delivery and worldwide delivery is available.

For any more Clarisonic information, put the word ‘Clarisonic’ into the search box on my blog. I talk about it all of the time. It’s my very favourite beauty contraption!

Lush – My Best and Worst

12 Jun

‘Sweetie Pie’ Shower Jelly -

I was given a sample of this shower jelly when buying the sugar based Lip Scrub that I blogged about recently. The smell alone sold this shower jelly to me- I headed to a Lush store as soon as I possibly could and bought it.

As Lush describe – this is a jelly scented with coconut and cherries – it was made to celebrate Lush’s 10th birthday! To me it has a unique, super sweet smell, that makes me want to eat it. I definitely can’t smell coconut! I think I smell berries – very sweet berries.

The jelly is slightly impractical as the video blog above shows. Initially I had tried to break pieces off, which was fairly hard to do – and wasteful – as they fell every time to the shower floor. I began using it as you would a bar of soap – a bar of soap that you have to cling onto gently – to keep it within your grip and yet gently, so as not to break it. It is a seaweed based jelly that is suitable for the hair and scalp as well as for all over the body. It really does smell delicious. Apparently best used if you break a little onto a wash cloth.

100g – £2.95
240g – £5.95
www.lush.co.uk/sweetiepiejelly

Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner -

Use as you would a hair conditioner but on the body! After washing while skin is still damp, spread this all over, and simply rinse off. Pat dry with towel rather than rubbing vigorously to leave the moisture on the skin.

I have just expressed a love for the sweetie pie shower jelly’s smell- well I love this even more. I sometimes just pick it up to smell it. It has Lush’s ‘Rose Jam’ scent. It’s packed with fairtrade shea butter and has some argan oil and brazil nut oil, almond oil and goji berry juice. Perfect for those like me who are lazy with body moisturising. I’m getting better at doing it, but this is the extremely easy way! Please at least if you pass a Lush store ask for a sample of this, or even just smell it. It smells of rich sweet roses, but edible sweet roses.

225g – £15.50
www.lush.co.uk/bodyconditioner

‘Ultrabland’ Cleanser -

As I expressed in the video blog. The first time of using this cleanser I was deeply unimpressed. I was in a house with a broken boiler, and had a small sample pot of this cleanser. I applied it to dry skin, it is a mixture of beeswax and almond oil, and as I began to splash my face with cold water I realised that this product wasn’t going anywhere. My face was covered in a mixture of wax and make up. It didn’t break down and rinse away as oil cleansers that I use do. I grabbed my Clarisonic, which ended up also covered in make up and wax. I had to pour a kettle of boiling water over the brush head to clean it afterwards.

A week later I went into Lush, and asked why this highly recommended product -as they say recommended by 100% of their staff – had left me putting it on a mental hit list. They explained that cold water would not bring this off. I took another sample from them and this time removed it with a warm facecloth. I must admit that this was effective and my skin did feel lovely and soft. But as a day to day cleanser I would definitely prefer one to be more versatile, hot water and a face cloth aren’t always with us necessarily, especially if you are someone on the move and often away from home as I am. Even the lady in the shop told me that when removing it with warm cotton wool, sometimes you need to keep going over it and over it again. I kept thinking of how easy and thorough Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel is by comparison.

45g – £6.45
100g – £10.25
www.lush.co.uk/ultrablandcleanser

Please let me know by commenting below, what your favourite Lush products are, or any ones that you aren’t so fond of too! If you have tried the Ultrabland cleanser, and had a similar experience to mine, or even quite the opposite, please do let me know as well. I think the cold water circumstance of that evening did not help when trying that particular product!

Clarisonic Mia vs Rio Sonicleanse Cleansing Brushes

23 May

I am just going to start by saying that I consider the Clarisonic Mia to be one of my favourite beauty investments of all time.

When asked to compare it to another extremely similar product, it was both exciting and yet hard to stay objective. But I truly have taken each cleansing brush and compared it to the other, as if it was my very first time using one.

I have used them on alternate days. I have used them simultaneously on opposite sides of the face! I have considered practicality, weight and structure. This review is impartial, and long considered. I have been using the brushes side by side for over a month now.

The Clarisonic Mia

It costs £120.00. It is the smallest of the brushes in the Clarisonic range. On their USA website, the brush is available in seventeen different colours!! Any electrical product on the market is a huge success and a huge seller if being produced in that many colours.

Per minute of usage, patented sonic frequency has this amazing little brush pulsing 18000 times – 300 times per single second. It feels incredibly gentle on the skin- a deep vibration- that stimulates circulation, and cleanses away make up 6 times more effectively than with hands alone. I love that it gently curves its way into every little nook and cranny of the face. It never leaves my skin feeling scratched, irritated, or raw.

The standard brush comes with a sensitive brush-head. I have never tried, and now have no desire to try the normal brush head, the sensitive brush works perfectly well for me. It is a compact sturdy little machine that is fully water proof. It is smaller, and yet heavier than the Rio Sonicleanse, 250 grams to be precise. It is a one speed machine!

It also comes with a trial size Clarisonic Hydro Cleanser.

I wrote a blog about the Clarisonic Mia back in January, so for any more information on it, or advice when first using it, here is that blog.

The Rio Sonicleanse

Priced at a much more affordable £49.99.

It is a slightly bigger and noisier brush, it beeps and bleeps, when turned on, and when it is time to move the brush onto the next area of the face. The Rio Sonicleanse offers 10,000 sonic brush pulses per minute – so nearly half of the Clarisonic’s. So far it comes with no other option than a standard brush-head – I would very much like to try a senstive version. The Rio has two speeds, as oppose to Clarisonic Mia’s one speed. The Rio also comes with a spare brush head – which is a really nice bonus, as both brushes if used daily, need their brush changed approximately every 3 months. I find you can get a little longer out of a brush head if washing it properly – I use hot water and Bobbi Brown’s ‘Conditioning Brush Cleanser’ .

It removes make up more effectively, it cleanses deep into the pores. Removes dead skin cells, and leaves you with brighter, fresher skin.

I feel that the Rio Sonicleanse’s brush doesn’t work quite so nicely around the face, it feels a little more that it sits on the surface and isn’t quite as easy to use around the nose and jaw line because the brush is less flexible.

Although the Rio is water resistant, from reviews and instructions, I believe that this is a different thing to waterproof! Don’t drop it in the bath, or leave it under running water.

It has a more traditional charger than the Clarisonic’s – as demonstated in the video – the Clarisonic’s charger clips neatly onto the front of the unit – which makes it compact and a perfect travel companion.

My verdict

Using both brushes on the skin simultaneously, the Clarisonic feels slightly more gentle, and get gets in and around the nose and chin more effectively. I feel that it really hugs the curves of the face. It is also significantly quieter than the Rio whilst doing so – only relevant when you have a sleeping loved one just through the door who keeps telling you to be quiet – a comment I have never had whist using the Clarisonic!!

Both brushes cleanse more effectively than with hands alone. They both will leave you with cleaner, brighter skin. Don’t be surprised if you have a few extra breakouts in the first few weeks of using a cleansing brush – you are cleansing deeply – and it will pass. Products that you apply after the cleanse will be more readily and effectively absorbed into the skin. Both brushes need charging approximately once a week.

If you can’t justify the expense of a Clarisonic, but do like the idea of a cleansing brush, then the Rio will do a perfectly good job. It just isn’t quite as slick, compact, and perfect but for far less than half the price it is a good alternative to have on the market.

Links to buy -

Although they aren’t expecting the product back in stock until the 31st May, Peak Nutrition has the Rio Sonicleanse priced at £40.00 – their postage is only £2.50 www.peak-nutririon.co.uk/Rio

The Clarisonic Mia is available in Space NK, but is also available with free delivery worldwide for £120.00 on www.feelunique.com/clarisonicmia or www.lookfantastic.com/clarisonic - the link to lookfantastic is also the place for replacement brush heads.

If you live in the USA – you lucky people – the Clarisonic Mia is $120.oo! Not everything American made is always cheaper in America – Stila for example – but the Clarisonic is, significantly so. www.sephora.com/clarisonic

Clarisonic – How I’ve longed for you

4 Jan

Photobucket

In October, I bought a Clarisonic. I had walked out of an eyebrow appointment on Weybridge High Street, Space NK caught my eye, and I knew I had found my moment.

A little early for a Christmas present for myself, but that’s what I told myself it was, as I flung the door open and announced, for all to hear – “I need a Clarisonic”.

I chose a Clarisonic Mia – they are £120. No matter where you look in the UK, they are £120. I had the bright idea of looking on ebay for one. The problem with ebay is that they all seemed to be from the USA, therefore they have a different plug, and their voltage isn’t the same as ours. It made me unsure, and I didn’t particularly want the hassle of an adaptor.

For those who aren’t familiar with a Clarisonic, it is a brush that massages the skin, and is used for cleansing. It uses a sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second. The ‘Mia’ is the most compact option in the Clarisonic range. It is cordless – so I take it in the shower, portable – I’ve started taking it everywhere if staying away, and it lasts for about a week before it needs recharging – which is really convenient if just away for a few days.

Apparently manually cleansing the skin isn’t as effective as we once thought, which is fairly disheartening to hear. If you can’t justify buying a Clarisonic, but feel your skin isn’t clean enough after one cleanse, then cleanse again – double cleansing is very beneficial.

Clarisonic claim that by using the brush, the skin is cleansed 6x more effectively than by cleansing with your hands alone, in 60 seconds. Products, such as serums and moisturisers, are more effectively absorbed because the skin is better prepared. And impurities are gently massaged away from pores for cleaner and healthier skin.

I delayed in writing this blog, because for the first two weeks of using the Mia, I had breakouts on my chin. After doing a little research I realised this is not particularly unusual. It’s an adjustment for the skin – a really deep cleanse – so everything comes to the surface. It stimulates circulation, you can really feel that it does, the skin seems to glow.

I initially was distressed, to see that a ‘sensitive’ rather than ‘normal’ brush-head was supplied, but having used it repeatedly, I think for my skin, the sensitive option is exactly what I need. The brush-head needs to be replaced every few months.

I use the brush in the following way, this hasn’t necessarily been suggested by Clarisonic, it’s just a guideline of what is working for me. I have been using Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel with it, but any cleanser that you lather onto your face with water, and splash off would work perfectly. Mixing a little cleanser with a few drops of water in my hands, I rub all over my face and cleanse. While the cleanser is still all over the skin I use the Clarisonic all over my face and neck, and if in the shower, my chest too. It doesn’t have to be moved around madly – just slowly around the face.  It’s excellent for circulation, you can feel that it is.

The facts below I found on the Clarisonic section of  lookfantastic.com

Clinical studies prove:

  • 6 times more make up removal.
  • Twice as effective at removing grease and dirt.
  • 61% better absorption of vitamin C after cleansing compared with manual cleansing.
  • After 8 weeks there is a greater improvement in the reduction of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the side of the face where the Clarisonic was used.
  • 81% of participants reported better than previous shaving methods with softer skin and reduced irritation (for men)
  • 83% of participants reported healthier skin.
  • 70% of participants reported fewer blemishes.
  • 69% of participants reported fewer dry patches.
  • 68% reported decreased appearance of pore size.

My friend India got married in November, I bought her a Clarisonic, she said it was the best wedding gift she could ever have imagined – I am aware this is not a thoughtful gift for her husband, but I did  check with him first!!

Every website seems to be offering free delivery – lookfantastic.com is even offer free shipping worldwide – in fact they always do.

I am a little bit obsessed with their Christmas store on that website – fabulous ideas. If anyone bought me anything from their accessorise section, even the Ole Henriksen Complexion Sponge for £2.55 I would be delighted!

I would be truly shocked if you could find products cheaper in stores. The internet is the way forward, in every area. I have always loved Christmas shopping – it is the one thing I am truly organised with – consistently, year after year. It will surprise few people who know me, that the beauty websites are a major priority to me all year round, and especially at Christmas when I want to shower my favourite finds on my nearest and dearest.

Unfortunately this year, without a hint of exaggeration, I had 29 people to buy for, on my Christmas list. The shopping at that stage becomes less personal and more panicked. This has also been the year of weddings and 30th birthdays.

I am currently working six day weeks, the 29 gifts were bought well in advance and many online, especially the ones for the many children in my life.

It becomes difficult when friends begin to have children, not one friend with one child, but multiple friends with multiple children – where do you draw the line? Godchildren, and nieces and nephews are essentials. But what about your godchild’s siblings? And other dear friends, and extended family with children too? Of course you want to buy for everyone, but is it possible?

Back to beauty. Space NK is offering free delivery and gift wrap. Now the ingenious thing about this is, if you aren’t going to have time to deliver all the gifts around before Christmas, then send them directly gift wrapped from somewhere like Space NK. Who wouldn’t be happy to receive Touche Veloutee by Terry, an Aromatherapy Associates Relax Candle, a Diptyque Scented Oval, or indeed a Clarisonic Mia,  gift wrapped and delivered to their door? I just bought a Clarisonic for my girlfriend’s wedding present, I cannot express her joy. Her poor husband, what an inappropriate wedding gift!!

Amazon.co.uk is unbeatable on electrical items – everything all year round appears to be so much cheaper than on the high street. It’s not only the economy that is affecting the high street shops, it’s undoubtedly the internet too.

Kelly Brook Beauty Tips….

Kelly Brook

Diamond Kelly BrookKelly BrookKelly Brook uses 6 years

I’ve been friends with Kelly for nearly a decade. One of my favourite things about her is that she never mentions how she looks – nothing good and nothing bad – I admire both. She’s ridiculously gorgeous, that goes without saying. Very happy without make up, in her gym stuff, in a halloween costume, or dressed up to the nines. She’s just very comfortable, which I’ve said before, and I’ll say again, is really attractive.

Having said all of that I was desperate to know, for the blog, what her favourite products currently are, so I asked Kelly, who is working in Belfast on what sounds like a very elegant project – Keith Lemon’s new film – for her top 5 beauty products. Links to them are at the bottom.

1) Clarisonic Mia Skin Cleansing System £120.00 - Recommended to me by Nichola Joss (the lady Kelly would work with before major photoshoots). Amazing cleansing brush works with your face cleanser to completely clean your face free of make up and dirt. Shrinks pores and deeply cleanses.

2) Linda Meredith Cleansing Gel 130ml £39.00 - I love a face cleanser that I can mix with water and lather up. Linda Meredith has the most incredible skincare line and I have used her products for about 6 years.

3) Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair 50ml £54.00 –  Old school. Can’t beat it. Classic night serum that wins every beauty award.

4) Nubo Diamond Peel and Reveal £65.00 – I have just started using this – every 3 days. Crushed diamonds exfoliate your skin without damaging of scratching the surface. (There are actually two stages to this process – both tubes are 80ml  - so although this product sounds high end on the price scale for 160ml it feels a whole lot more reasonable)

5) Mario Badescu Drying Cream 14ml £10.50 – For an emergency – zaps everything!! (The drying lotion is also raved about, I’m actually going to order both to try)
